NAIROBI, Kenya — Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has called for an independent investigation into the road accident at Karai along the Nakuru–Naivasha Highway that claimed the life of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, raising concerns over the handling of the incident.
In a statement, Amisi questioned the sequence of events following the fatal crash, arguing that it was inappropriate for the driver of the Climax Coaches bus involved in the accident to issue a public account before the police had concluded investigations or issued an official statement.
“A proper independent investigation must be carried out around this Karai accident. It is wrong for the driver of the Climax bus to come out first to speak before the police conduct and officially communicate on the incident,” Amisi said.
The lawmaker said the circumstances surrounding the accident warranted heightened scrutiny given Jirongo’s stature in national politics, adding that transparency would help restore public confidence in road crash investigations.
Amisi framed his remarks within broader concerns about accountability and institutional credibility, calling for what he termed a “renaissance” in how such sensitive incidents are handled by authorities.
Jirongo, a prominent businessman and influential KANU-era politician, died following the accident that occurred near Karai, a section of the highway that has previously been flagged as a high-risk stretch due to frequent crashes.
Police are yet to release a comprehensive report detailing the cause of the accident as investigations continue.
Jirongo’s death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from political leaders across the divide, many describing him as a charismatic figure whose influence shaped Kenya’s political landscape in the 1990s and early 2000s.
