NTSA Announces Free Inspection Clinics for School Transport Vehicles Ahead of New Term

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) will conduct free inspection clinics for school buses and vans this weekend under its “Operation Watoto Wafike Salama” campaign.

The exercise is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, between 9 am and 3 pm, at all designated NTSA inspection centres nationwide.

In Kisii County, however, the clinic will take place a day earlier, on Friday, August 22, to accommodate local schools and transport operators.

NTSA said the initiative seeks to safeguard learners by ensuring school transport vehicles are roadworthy before schools reopen for the new academic term.

Inspectors will check braking systems, tires, seatbelts, lights, and overall mechanical condition, providing guidance on any repairs or adjustments needed to meet safety standards.

“We will make a safety assessment to guide motor vehicle owners and schools on corrective measures to ensure the safety of all our children,” the Authority said in a statement.

Inspection centres taking part in the exercise include Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Nyahururu, Machakos, Voi, Kitale, Kakamega, Nyeri, Thika, Kisumu, Embu, Meru, Kericho, Garissa, and the Likoni Road centre in Nairobi.

NTSA has urged schools and transport providers to take advantage of the free clinics, stressing that compliance will not only improve road safety but also boost parental confidence in school transport systems.

The campaign builds on similar safety drives previously conducted for public service vehicles and is part of NTSA’s wider efforts to curb accidents involving children and promote a culture of responsible road use.
