Two Women Charged in Shanzu Over Violent Robbery of British National in Mombasa

Date:

MOMBASA, Kenya — Two women were on Tuesday arraigned before the Shanzu Law Courts, accused of violently robbing a British national at an apartment in Nyali, Mombasa County.

The accused — Samira Mumbi Kiarie and Diana Wanjiru Mwaura — appeared before Chief Magistrate Antony Mwicigi, where they denied charges of robbery with violence contrary to Section 296(2) of the Penal Code.

According to the charge sheet, the two, together with others not before the court, allegedly robbed Dharmindal Kumar of Sh415,000 on the night of September 28, 2025, while using actual violence against him at Galaxy Apartments in Nyali Sub-county.

Principal Prosecution Counsel Anthony Musyoka, representing the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), urged the court to impose strict bond conditions, citing fears that the accused could abscond if released under lenient terms.

“The seriousness of the offence and the potential flight risk necessitate careful consideration by the court,” Musyoka told the court.

Chief Magistrate Mwicigi directed that a pre-bail report be prepared to guide the court in determining appropriate bond terms. The case will be mentioned on November 25, 2025.

Samira, one of the accused, is no stranger to controversy. Investigations have linked her to a separate incident in which she allegedly lured another British man into a staged “dream date” that turned into a robbery.

Detectives say Samira had spent months wooing the victim online before convincing him to visit her apartment in Nyali. Moments after his arrival, two men reportedly stormed in — one posing as her enraged husband, the other flashing a fake police identification card.

The gang is said to have accused the Briton of wrecking Samira’s marriage and coerced him into transferring Sh800,000 to mobile phone accounts provided by the assailants. After the transaction, the trio allegedly escorted the shaken victim out before disappearing into the night.

Forensic intelligence later led detectives to Samira and her alleged accomplice, Paul Webster Mangeni, alias Paulo, who were arrested and linked to a wider syndicate targeting foreign nationals through online dating scams.

Authorities believe the group has been using short-stay apartments around Mombasa to lure, intimidate, and extort foreigners, posing a growing security concern in the coastal city.

Police say investigations into the syndicate’s operations are ongoing, with more arrests expected as the DCI intensifies efforts to dismantle the network.
