NAIROBI, Kenya — The journalism community in Kenya is mourning the sudden death of veteran science journalist Ben Ochieng Ogodo, who passed away in the early hours of Thursday, April 17, 2025.
The Kenya Editors Guild (KEG) confirmed the news in a statement issued by CEO Rosalia Omungo, who described Ogodo as a dedicated journalist and an active voice in media circles.
“Ochieng had been feeling slightly unwell in recent days, attributing it to a mild flu,” Omungo said.
Despite his symptoms, Ogodo appeared to be in good spirits as recently as Wednesday evening. According to Omungo, he actively shared his thoughts on the Arsenal vs. Real Madrid football match on Facebook, showing no signs of distress.
Sudden Medical Emergency
Tragedy struck just hours later. At around 2am, while resting at home, Ogodo experienced sudden and severe chest pain. He quickly alerted his children, who acted fast—calling a cab to take him to Mama Lucy Hospital.
They also contacted a relative, Dan Ogodo, who met them at the hospital. Unfortunately, despite their quick response, Ogodo was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital’s emergency section.
KEG has called on the public and media fraternity to keep Ogodo’s family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
“We are still coming to terms with this loss and ask for your prayers and support for the family,” said Omungo. “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Ben Ochieng Ogodo was widely respected for his contributions to science journalism and media training across Africa. His passing leaves a void in the field and in the hearts of those who knew him.
