NAIROBI, Kenya — Moses Kuria has sparked fresh political debate after issuing one of his clearest signals yet that he may seek the Nairobi governorship in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, Kuria listed a series of reasons why he believes he and his team are well-positioned to steer the capital, in what many observers interpreted as a soft launch of his bid to succeed Governor Johnson Sakaja.
“Not because of our tribes. Not because of our parties. Because we care for Nairobi. Because we understand what Nairobians are going through,” Kuria wrote. “Because we have local, regional and global networks to fix Nairobi… Because we are not tribal. Because we have what it takes to MAKE NAIROBI WORK AGAIN.”
The comments come amid growing political realignments ahead of 2027, with Nairobi expected to be one of the most competitive races due to its demographic complexity, economic weight, and strategic influence in national politics.
Kuria, a former Gatundu South MP and ex-Cabinet Secretary for Trade, has increasingly positioned himself at the centre of discussions around governance in the capital. His post did not explicitly declare a candidacy, but insiders in his political circle say the messaging forms part of a broader strategy to test public sentiment.
The capital’s challenges—including perennial water shortages, congestion, unemployment, waste management failures, and recurrent corruption scandals—are expected to dominate the 2027 campaign agenda.
Kuria’s emphasis on “making Nairobi work again” mirrors a reform-focused narrative that has gained traction among aspirants positioning themselves as solutions-oriented. Analysts say this framing also signals possible efforts to build alliances across political parties, especially as 2027 coalitions begin to take shape.
Kuria, known for his bold political messaging, has yet to outline specific policy proposals or formally launch a campaign team. However, his newfound focus on Nairobi’s socio-economic concerns suggests an accelerated pivot toward capital politics.

For now, his statement has heightened speculation as Nairobi residents, political actors, and parties assess how a Kuria candidacy would shift the city’s already fluid political landscape.
