NAIROBI, Kenya — A weekend church service in Juja turned into a political thriller when MP George Koimburi was allegedly seized in broad daylight, bundled into a waiting Subaru, and later found injured and abandoned at a coffee plantation in Kiambu County.
Now, questions are swirling about who’s behind the abduction, what Koimburi knows, and why he’s once again at the center of a high-stakes political storm.
The Juja lawmaker, who vanished on Sunday, May 25, was found dumped at Jacaranda Coffee Plantation in the Kibichoi area, bruised and visibly shaken.
Videos making rounds online show him writhing in pain—footage that has his family fearing for his life.
What was meant to be a peaceful Sunday service ended with gasps and confusion. Witnesses say Koimburi was taken in full view of congregants, with some alleging that his wife sustained injuries trying to stop the men from taking him. The vehicle—described as a Subaru—sped off, leaving behind stunned worshippers at the Full Gospel Church in Mugutha.
DCI denies involvement amid land fraud probe
While chaos brewed on the ground, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) moved quickly to clear its name.
In a statement, the DCI denied any role in Sunday’s seizure but confirmed that Koimburi was a person of interest in a probe involving alleged land fraud and misuse of Constituency Development Funds (CDF).
The DCI says it has been pursuing Koimburi since Friday. Meanwhile, his camp insists the MP went into hiding that very day after narrowly escaping what they describe as an attempted abduction.
Whether Koimburi was on the run or in forced hiding remains murky. What’s clear is that by Sunday morning, he had resurfaced—albeit briefly—at another church in Kiambu, only to be taken hours later.
This isn’t Koimburi’s first brush with controversy. Back in February, DCI detectives reportedly intercepted him on his way to Parliament. The issue? Explosive remarks he made during a church service, alleging that the government spent over Sh13 billion to influence African leaders in support of Raila Odinga’s African Union Commission chairmanship bid.
Those remarks placed him on the political radar, and many now believe the tension may have contributed to the latest episode.
A political puzzle with no clear answers yet
As Koimburi recovers under medical care, his supporters want answers—and fast. Who took him? Why? And why does it feel like parts of the story are being kept under wraps?
For now, the only certainty is that George Koimburi remains a deeply polarizing figure in Kenyan politics—equal parts whistleblower, suspect, and survivor.
