Speaking at the IGAD Media Awards in Nairobi, Dr. Gebeyehu highlighted the essential role of an independent media in fostering transparency and holding institutions accountable across the region.
“As we gather to honor the courage and creativity of journalists, content creators, and media outlets, it is clear that we must also confront the barriers that undermine media freedom,” Dr. Gebeyehu said. “These challenges demand coordinated action from both policymakers and the media community to ensure a landscape of transparency and trust.”
The IGAD Media Awards, now in their second edition, celebrated journalists from IGAD’s seven member states, recognizing them for their contributions to storytelling that emphasizes peace, development, and hope within Africa.
Dr. Gebeyehu commended media professionals as “torchbearers of change,” applauding their role in reflecting society’s realities and inspiring unity in the face of regional challenges.
IGAD, an intergovernmental organization focused on development and stability within the Horn of Africa, has long collaborated with local governments and communities.
Dr. Gebeyehu noted that these efforts are most effective when supported by a robust media sector committed to exposing truth and fostering dialogue.
“The media are society’s mirror and the champions of transformation,” he said. “Their stories breathe life into the ideals of peace, security, and progress. They remind us that even in times of adversity, hope remains steadfast.”
Acknowledging the rapidly evolving media landscape, Dr. Gebeyehu also urged journalists to embrace new storytelling technologies to remain relevant and effective in their field.
“I encourage media practitioners to adapt to emerging trends in public information to sustain their role as leaders in their craft,” he added.
