Nairobi, Kenya- Former Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has come to the defense of ex-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, warning against what he termed as attempts to violate his rights ahead of his anticipated homecoming rally.
Speaking on Citizen TV’s The Explainer show, Kuria described Gachagua as a politician with flaws like everyone else but emphasized that his democratic rights must be respected.
“Every angel has a past, and every devil has a future. Gachagua needs to understand that one cannot use old tactics to thrive in the current political environment—but that does not mean he should be denied his political space,” Kuria said.
Kuria Warns Against Political Intimidation
Kuria accused Kipchumba Murkomen of unfairly targeting Gachagua by claiming that intelligence reports linked the former DP to alleged criminal intentions.
The former president’s advisor dismissed those claims as baseless, saying such tactics echo the weaponization of state institutions witnessed in previous regimes.
“I will defend Gachagua’s political rights which are now being threatened.” he said.
Old Politics, New Realities
While defending Gachagua’s right to political association, Kuria also took a swipe at his brand of politics. He argued that the era of tribal unity politics was long gone and urged Gachagua to reinvent himself if he hopes to remain relevant.
“Kenya has moved beyond tribal mobilization. That card cannot sell in this age,” Kuria noted, stressing that the country needs leaders who can speak to national issues rather than ethnic loyalties.
Rebuke to Duale Over 2027 Remarks
Kuria also turned his guns on Health CS Aden Duale for likening the upcoming 2027 elections to the volatile 2007 polls, a period marked by post-election violence.
He cautioned that such rhetoric risks reopening old wounds among victims and should never come from senior leaders entrusted with public confidence.
“People who were affected by the 2007 post-election violence will interpret such remarks differently. Leaders should be careful with their words,” Kuria said.
Building His Own Political Space
Kuria’s latest remarks underscore his growing role as a political contrarian and whistleblower. Having fallen out with both the Uhuru and Ruto administrations, he is increasingly positioning himself as an independent voice in Kenya’s shifting political landscape.
With Gachagua’s homecoming expected to be a high-stakes moment, Kuria’s defense appears to signal the start of realignments in Mount Kenya politics—where loyalties remain fluid and the 2027 race looms large.
