23 Dead as Heavy Rains Trigger Flooding Across Nairobi

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya- At least 23 people have died following heavy overnight rains that caused widespread flooding and destruction across Nairobi, according to the National Police Service.

Authorities said the torrential downpour led to massive flooding in several estates, destruction of property, road closures, and the displacement of residents.

Among the hardest-hit areas are Mukuru, Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, South B, South C, Pipeline/Embakasi, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, and parts of Westlands.

Major roads have also been affected, including sections of Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road, Thika Superhighway, Jogoo Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road, causing significant traffic disruptions across the city.

The National Police Service, working alongside other emergency responders, launched overnight search and rescue operations to assist affected residents.

Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that 29 people have so far been rescued from various flooded locations and are receiving support.

Emergency teams remain on the ground responding to distress calls as heavy rains continue to pound parts of the capital.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and report emergencies through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, and 112 as rescue operations continue.
