NAIROBI, Kenya – As the festive season nears, Nairobi Regional Commissioner Katee Mwanza has issued crucial safety guidelines to help residents and visitors stay secure during the celebrations.
His advice spans from home security to road safety, underscoring a proactive approach to reducing crime and accidents in the bustling holiday period.
With many Nairobi residents planning trips upcountry, Mwanza stresses the importance of securing homes to deter burglaries.
“Ensure your homes are secure before traveling to avoid break-ins,” he advises, adding that increased patrols across residential areas will enhance security.
Mwanza also urges resident associations to work closely with local law enforcement, reporting any suspicious activities without delay.
During a Monday morning interview on Radio Citizen, Mwanza highlighted the rise in scams, particularly fake promotions and lotteries, that typically increase during the holidays.
“Be cautious of fraudulent promotions, both online and on the streets. Always buy from trusted vendors,” he warns.
Shopping malls are also under heightened security scrutiny. Mall management is urged to report suspicious vehicles, unattended bags, or unusual activity to authorities immediately.
As financial transactions surge during the festive season, Mwanza also advises caution when withdrawing money.
“Stay alert when using ATMs. Choose well-lit, secure locations, and avoid large withdrawals,” he says, stressing the importance of personal safety.
In light of rising violence linked to illegal substances such as bhang, Mwanza calls on private security firms to use sniffer dogs in public spaces like malls.
This measure is aimed at preventing drugs from entering crowded areas.
“Life is irreplaceable. Enjoy the festive season, but remember to prioritize your safety on the roads,” he said.
He urges motorists to avoid driving under the influence, a major cause of accidents during the holidays.
For those traveling upcountry, Mwanza assures that additional security measures are in place at bus terminals to ensure the safety of passengers.
Authorities will be closely monitoring these transport hubs throughout the season.
