NAIROBI, Kenya — Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway.
In a condolence message, Kalonzo described Jirongo’s death as a profound loss not only to his family but also to the people of Lugari, Kakamega County, and the country at large.
He said Jirongo’s passing had robbed Kenya of a distinctive and courageous political voice.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo. His tragic death in a road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway is a profound loss to his family, the people of Lugari, and the nation at large,” Kalonzo said.
The Wiper leader eulogised Jirongo as a bold and charismatic politician who consistently challenged convention and pursued his beliefs with clarity and conviction.
He noted that Jirongo’s contribution to Kenya’s public life would endure beyond his years in elective politics.
“Hon. Jirongo was a bold and charismatic leader who never shied away from standing out, challenging convention, or pursuing his convictions with courage and clarity. His contribution to Kenya’s public life and his distinctive voice in our national discourse will be remembered,” he added.
Jirongo, a former ally of the late President Daniel arap Moi before later charting an independent political path, was a prominent figure in Kenya’s multiparty era. His political career, marked by ambition and controversy in equal measure, saw him contest the presidency and play an influential role in Western Kenya politics.
Kalonzo conveyed condolences on behalf of his family and the Wiper Democratic Movement, extending his sympathies to Jirongo’s relatives, friends, and supporters across Kakamega County and the wider Western Kenya region.
“On behalf of my family and the Wiper Party, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, his friends, and the people of Kakamega County and the wider Western Kenya region,” he said.
The opposition leader also offered prayers for Jirongo’s family, urging Kenyans to stand with them during the period of mourning.

“May God grant his family strength and comfort during this difficult time, and may the soul of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo rest in eternal peace,” Kalonzo said.
Jirongo’s death adds to growing concern over road safety along major highways, particularly the Nairobi–Nakuru corridor, which has recorded a series of fatal accidents in recent years. Authorities have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and greater caution by motorists to stem the rising toll.
