NAKURU, Kenya — Detectives have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and seized cannabis worth Sh8.1 million following a dramatic police pursuit along the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations said officers from its Anti-Narcotics Unit in the Rift Valley region intercepted the suspect during a routine patrol on March 14, 2026.
The officers flagged down a blue Toyota Voxy with registration number KCS 496B after it aroused suspicion.
However, the driver allegedly ignored the order to stop and sped off, triggering a high-speed chase towards the Kaptembwa area.
High-speed pursuit
During the pursuit, detectives managed to deflate the vehicle’s front right tyre in an attempt to stop the suspect.
Despite the damage, the driver continued driving towards the 140 Area before abandoning the vehicle in a vacant plot near Kaptembwa Police Station and attempting to escape on foot.
Police said the suspect was quickly cornered and arrested by the pursuing officers.
He was identified as David Muraya, 35.
Drugs worth millions recovered
A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of 13 sacks containing dry green plant material suspected to be cannabis sativa.
Authorities said the consignment weighed approximately 272 kilograms with an estimated street value of Sh8,160,000.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, March 16, 2026.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations said the arrest forms part of ongoing operations aimed at dismantling narcotics trafficking networks operating within the region.
Authorities have also urged members of the public to report drug-related activities through the Fichua Kwa DCI platform or the toll-free hotline 0800 722 203.
