NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ford Foundation, a long-time supporter of democratic institutions and civil society in East Africa, has issued a statement clarifying its non-partisan stance amid recent protests against Kenya’s finance bill.

The foundation emphasized its commitment to supporting Kenya’s development while disassociating itself from the protests.

In the press release, the Ford Foundation highlighted its enduring commitment since 1963 to the independence and development of East Africa’s democratic institutions.

The organization underscored its role in aiding civil servants and technical experts in establishing an independent Kenya, contributing to the educational sector, and supporting the Kenyan government and civil society.

“We retain an ongoing commitment to supporting work in support of Kenya’s development and Kenya’s leadership on an African and global stage,” the foundation stated.

It also noted its support for the inaugural African Climate Summit held in 2023 in Nairobi and Kenya’s leadership as co-chair of the Open Government Partnership.

However, the foundation made it clear that while it acknowledges the right of Kenyans to advocate peacefully for a just and equitable society, it does not condone violence or hateful actions against any institution, individual, or community.

“We do not fund or sponsor the recent protests against the finance bill and have a strictly non-partisan policy for all of our grantmaking,” the statement read.

The foundation reiterated its dedication to fostering opportunities for all Kenyans, building on a legacy of over 60 years in the region.
