NAIROBI, Kenya — Most parts of Kenya will experience mainly sunny and dry conditions in January 2026, according to the latest climate outlook by the Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met).
In its January forecast, Kenya Met said dry weather will dominate much of the country. However, it cautioned that some regions are likely to receive occasional rainfall during the month.
Areas expected to record intermittent showers include western Kenya, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Southern Rift Valley, and parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County. The forecast also covers the south-eastern lowlands and sections of the southern coastal strip.
Kenya Met said the rainfall episodes will be isolated and short-lived, with no widespread wet conditions anticipated. As a result, most regions will continue to experience warm days and generally dry weather patterns.
The department noted that the outlook aligns with the typical January climate, which falls within the dry season for much of the country. January often records reduced rainfall following the short rains season that ends in December.
For farmers, the dry conditions could affect soil moisture levels, especially in arid and semi-arid areas. Agriculture experts say farmers relying on rain-fed farming may need to plan carefully, particularly for crop establishment and pasture management.
In regions expected to receive occasional rainfall, the showers could offer limited relief for crops and water sources. However, Kenya Met warned that the rains are unlikely to be sufficient to fully replenish water reservoirs or reverse dry conditions.
Urban areas, including Nairobi, may experience brief showers but will largely remain dry. The department advised residents to prepare for warm daytime temperatures and cooler nights, especially in highland regions.
In the coastal region, the southern parts are expected to receive occasional rainfall, while much of the coast will remain sunny. Tourism operators often benefit from dry January conditions, which attract both domestic and international visitors.
Kenya Met urged the public, county governments, and sector players to use the forecast for planning and decision-making. The department said it will continue to monitor weather patterns and issue updates if conditions change.
Kenya Met advised residents to follow its official communication channels for regular updates and advisories throughout the month.
