MOMBASA, Kenya – The chilling resurgence of abductions in Kenya has sparked widespread alarm, with Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir condemning the disturbing trend that threatens to stifle the voices of dissent against the Government.
In a statement on X-formerly Twitter, Governor Nassir highlighted the abduction of a young boy in Bamburi Go Kart and several others in Nairobi, signaling a return to an era of fear and repression that Kenyans had hoped was long past.
“The rate of so-called unknown abductions clearly indicates a return of an era Kenyans had wished away,” Governor Nassir stated.
“You cannot silence a people through making them disappear. A young boy was abducted today at Bamburi Go Kart and others abducted in Nairobi. This is definitely not the Kenya we want.”
The abductions appear to be targeting prominent figures in the new wave of anti-Financial Bill 2024 protests, which have seen a groundswell of support from Kenya’s youth.
The bill, which proposes additional taxes amidst a struggling economy, has been met with fierce opposition, particularly from Generation Z who have taken to the streets and social media to voice their dissent.
The disappearance of protest leaders is a chilling tactic that harks back to the dark days of political repression in Kenya.
Human rights organizations have equally expressed concern over the abductions, calling for immediate action to ensure the safety and freedom of all citizens.
The escalating situation has also drawn condemnation from the African Union.
The continental body has urged the President William Ruto led government to uphold democratic principles and protect the right to protest.
“This is definitely not the Kenya we want,” Nassir emphasized, echoing the sentiments of countless Kenyans who are demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders.
The country is set to experience a series of major protests this week.
So far, two young men have died and hundreds others injured during the protetsts.
While the protestors have been peaceful and unarmed, police have used excessive force to disperse them.
