NAIROBI, Kenya — The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed that the investigation into the helicopter crash that killed Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ngeno and five others has formally been handed over to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department (AAID).
In a press statement issued Sunday, the Inspector-General of Police conveyed condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the victims, describing the February 28 incident in Nandi County as a devastating tragedy.
“Following the tragic helicopter crash yesterday, 28th February 2026, the Inspector-General of Police, on behalf of the National Police Service and in his personal capacity, conveys his condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the late Hon. Johana Ngeno… and the five other individuals who sadly lost their lives,” the statement read.
The crash occurred in the Chepkieb area of Mosop, Nandi County, at about 4:45 p.m., killing all six people on board the private helicopter, registration 5Y-DSB.
According to the NPS, management of the investigation has now been taken over in line with established aviation protocols.
“In accordance with standard operating procedures and international civil aviation guidelines, the management of the investigation into the cause of the accident has formally been taken over by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Department,” the Service said.
Under Kenya’s Civil Aviation (Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigation) Regulations and the Chicago Convention on International Civil Aviation, accident investigations are conducted independently of law enforcement agencies. Their primary objective is to establish the cause of the crash and recommend safety improvements, rather than apportion blame.
Police officers remain deployed at the scene to secure the crash site and facilitate investigators’ work.
“Officers from the National Police Service remain at the scene to secure the area and provide the requisite support to the aircraft accident investigators. We appeal to the public to remain calm as investigations continue,” the statement added.
The tragedy has drawn national attention, coming amid heightened political tensions and calls from some leaders for broader scrutiny of the incident. However, authorities have emphasized that the investigation will follow established legal and aviation safety frameworks.
Further updates, the police said, will be issued by the lead investigating agency once preliminary findings are available.
