Raila Summons ODM MCAs as Sakaja Impeachment Drive Gains Traction

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – ODM leader Raila Odinga has called Nairobi County Assembly members to a consultative meeting Tuesday morning amid intensifying efforts to impeach Governor Johnson Sakaja and his deputy, Njoroge Muchiri.

The session, scheduled for 10 am at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi, comes as the number of ward representatives backing Sakaja’s ouster has surged to 87—well above the threshold required to table an impeachment motion.

An invitation message sent by Majority Whip Moses Ogeto to members via the assembly’s WhatsApp group confirmed Raila’s attendance at the closed-door meeting.

Governor Sakaja’s political survival increasingly appears tied to Raila’s interventions, though the ODM leader’s earlier attempts to mediate have not succeeded in halting the process.

Raila has already held two meetings with county leadership since Friday, including one attended by the governor himself, but MCAs have pressed ahead with signature collection.

“We have the charges ready—more than 20 substantive charges against the governor. We passed the threshold in the fifth minute of collecting signatures. This time it is a whole House initiative,” said Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai on Monday.

The charges range from failure to release bursary and ward development funds to ignoring assembly resolutions and oversight mechanisms.

While the assembly adjourned for recess on August 7, Standing Orders allow a special sitting if at least 41 members petition the Speaker—a path MCAs are now considering.

Roysambu MCA Sospeter Wamumbi accused the county executive of sidelining the assembly, saying:

“The issues at hand are between the MCAs and the governor, not Raila. Sakaja cannot keep running for political cover.”

Despite Raila’s caution against pursuing impeachment, MCAs appear determined to proceed, with some framing the motion as a bipartisan initiative.

Last Friday’s marathon meeting at Raila’s Karen residence, which stretched from morning into the evening, ended without a breakthrough.

Sakaja was urged to address grievances directly, including releasing stalled ward funds, but no firm commitments emerged.
