Ruto Awards Late Raila Odinga Kenya’s Highest Civilian Honour

Date:

KITUI, Kenya — President William Ruto has posthumously conferred the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga with Kenya’s highest civilian honour, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart (C.G.H.), in recognition of his lifelong service to the nation.

Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui on Monday, President Ruto said the award acknowledges Raila’s “extraordinary contributions and enduring legacy” in shaping Kenya’s political and democratic history.

“The government and people of Kenya inscribe Hon. Raila Odinga’s name among the foremost of our heroes, under the public seal of the Republic,” Ruto said.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, and through the authority vested in me as President, I have today posthumously conferred upon the Right Honourable Raila Amolo Odinga the highest honour of the Republic, the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart of Kenya.”

The announcement was formalised through a special gazette notice dated October 20, 2025.

The Order of the Golden Heart is traditionally reserved for individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service and sacrifice for Kenya. Previous recipients include heads of state, national leaders, and distinguished public figures.

Raila, who passed away earlier this month, is widely remembered for his decades-long struggle for democracy, multi-party politics, and constitutional reforms.

His posthumous recognition comes amid a period of national reflection on his political journey and legacy.
