Three KDF Recruits Die During Training Exercise in Eldoret

Date:

ELDORET, Kenya — The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has announced the death of three recruits who collapsed during a scheduled training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

In a statement issued on Fiday, the military said the incident occurred on January 29, 2026, during a routine endurance exercise.

According to KDF, the recruits developed medical complications while undertaking the drill and were immediately attended to by on-site medical personnel before being evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for specialised treatment.

Despite efforts by medical teams, the three recruits were pronounced dead.

The military said the next of kin have been formally notified and that it is providing psychological and logistical support to the affected families, fellow recruits and colleagues.

KDF extended its condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased, describing the incident as a tragic loss to the institution.

Investigation Launched

The defence forces confirmed that a thorough investigation has been launched in line with established military procedures to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Findings from the probe, the military said, will guide any additional safety measures aimed at improving the welfare and protection of personnel undergoing training.

“The Kenya Defence Forces remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism and care for all its personnel,” the statement said.

The incident has once again drawn attention to safety protocols during intensive military training exercises, even as authorities await the outcome of the investigation.
