NAIROBI, Kenya– Nairobi motorists should prepare for major traffic changes starting this weekend as the city gears up to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
With thousands of fans expected to attend the opening match at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 3, police have announced a series of road closures and diversions aimed at easing movement and ensuring the safety of players, officials, and spectators.
Key Roads Affected
Several roads near match venues will experience full or partial closures during the tournament:
- Aerodrome Road: Fully closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout
- Lang’ata Road: One side closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Lusaka Roundabout
- Mombasa Road: Restricted on one side from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
Police have provided the following diversions to help motorists navigate the expected congestion:
- Mombasa Road to CBD: Use Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni
- Lang’ata Road to CBD: Divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road at Mbagathi Roundabout
- CBD to Thika, Ruiru, Juja: Use either Limuru Road or Kiambu Road
For fans headed to Kasarani Stadium:
- Matatus are advised to use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road, Ngomongo Road, and proceed to Ngomongo Roundabout
Motorists on Thika Road should consider Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road as alternate routes to avoid congestion.

As one of the three host cities for CHAN 2024 alongside Tanzania and Uganda, Nairobi will stage multiple high-stakes matches. The government has invested heavily in infrastructure and security to ensure smooth operations throughout the tournament.
