EMBU, Kenya – At least 230 lives have been lost in road accidents over the last ten months, according to statistics released by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The figures were revealed during a sensitization forum held in Embu, aimed at urging drivers to exercise caution during the festive season and beyond in order to save lives.
Speaking at the forum, Reagan Muriithi, NTSA Embu Regional Manager covering Embu, Kirinyaga and Tharaka Nithi counties, described the rising number of road fatalities as deeply concerning.
“The rate at which lives are being lost on our roads is alarming, and it calls for extra caution and responsibility from all drivers, especially during this festive season,” Muriithi said.

Muriithi further urged motorists to ensure they have verified and genuine insurance covers from credible insurance companies, warning that many drivers unknowingly use fake policies.
“Drivers must ensure they have genuine and verified insurance covers from credible companies because fake insurance makes compensation impossible when accidents occur,” he added.
He also emphasized the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations, noting that compliance is key to protecting both drivers and passengers.
“Adhering to traffic rules and regulations is not optional, it is the only way drivers can protect themselves, their passengers and other road users,” Muriithi said.
On his part, Embu Base Commander Morris Njeu issued a stern warning to motorists who flout traffic laws, stating that police officers will take firm action against offenders.
“We will not hesitate to arrest and take action against any driver found breaking traffic laws, as our priority is to safeguard lives on the road,” Njeu said.

Njeu also cautioned drivers against driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, citing it as one of the leading causes of road carnage in the country.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs remains a major cause of road carnage, and motorists must ensure they drive while sober at all times,” he said.
The sensitization forum comes as authorities intensify road safety campaigns ahead of the festive season, a period often marked by increased traffic and a spike in road accidents.
