Kenyan content creator, actor, and filmmaker Abel Mutua is grateful to be alive after being attacked and robbed by a knife-wielding gang in Kahawa West, Nairobi.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, when Mutua was reportedly accosted by a group of young men armed with large knives who made away with his iPhone 16 Pro Max and Bose headphones.
In a detailed Instagram post, Mutua — popularly known for his storytelling platform Mkurugenzi — narrated the ordeal with his trademark mix of humor and irony, saying the attack took place just across from the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) morgue.
“The young men at Kahawa West walinikaribisha jiji jana. iPhone 16 Pro Max gone, Bose Headphones gone as well. But cha muhimu ni despite the massive knives they were carrying, walinibakishia uhai,” Mutua wrote.
“Ironically, they jumped me right across from the KUTRRH Morgue. Wangeamua ningeamkia kwa fridge leo. Wabarikiwe for sparing a life,” he added, thanking his assailants for not harming him.
Mutua, who has built a massive following for his creative storytelling, took the frightening encounter in stride, joking that the robbers “welcomed him to the city.”
He also hinted at taking some time offline to recover from the experience, writing, “Haya! Mtaniruhusu nilale mteja siku kadhaa.”

While the post was laced with humor, it underscored growing concerns about urban insecurity in Nairobi, where muggings involving knives and crude weapons have recently been reported in several estates including Roysambu, Kasarani, Githurai, and Kahawa West.
Police have not yet issued a formal statement regarding the incident, though residents have repeatedly called for increased patrols and street lighting in the area to deter such attacks.
Mutua’s fans and fellow creatives flooded his comment section with messages of relief, many expressing gratitude that he escaped unharmed.
The former Tahidi High actor and co-founder of PhilIt Productions is one of Kenya’s most popular digital storytellers, known for his witty takes on life, fatherhood, and everyday experiences.
