Brace for More Rain: Met Dept Warns of Wet Week in Several Counties

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – Rainfall is expected to continue across several regions in Kenya over the next week, with parts of the Rift Valley, Western Kenya and the Central Highlands set to experience heavy downpours, the Kenya Meteorological Department has said in its latest forecast.

In the seven-day forecast running from May 27 to June 2, the department warns of uneven rain distribution across the country, with some areas expected to receive up to 120mm of rainfall while others remain largely dry.

The heaviest rains are likely to hit pockets of the Central Highlands—particularly Murang’a, Nyandarua, and Tharaka Nithi—as well as parts of Western Kenya including Kakamega and Busia, and areas straddling the border of Nandi and Kericho counties.

These regions could receive between 100mm and 120mm of rain over the week.

Counties in the Lake Victoria Basin—among them Kisumu, Siaya, Vihiga, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, and Nyamira—are forecast to receive between 20mm and 50mm.

Moderate rainfall of 10–20mm is expected in parts of the Rift Valley, including Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu, Kericho, Bomet, and Nakuru.

Meanwhile, the Coast is likely to experience lighter showers.

Areas such as Lamu and Garsen are forecast to receive between 10mm and 20mm of rainfall, while Kilifi, Bura, Kwale and Tsavo are expected to get less than 10mm.

Some counties, including Narok, Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet, are likely to remain dry throughout the forecast period.

In Nairobi and Kajiado, occasional light rain may be observed, with rainfall totals not expected to exceed 10mm. Similar conditions are expected in Mandera.

Temperature Extremes and Strong Winds

In addition to rain, the forecast highlights significant temperature variations across regions.

“Daytime temperatures above 30°C are likely over much of the Coast, Northeastern and Northwestern Kenya,” the Kenya Met Department said, adding that night-time temperatures may dip below 10°C in some areas of the Central Highlands, the Central Rift, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region.

Strong south-easterly winds of up to 25 knots (12.86 m/s) are also expected over the coastal strip and parts of the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands.

The weather agency is urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and take precautions, particularly in regions forecast to receive intense rainfall.
