Call To Action: Nairobi To Host High-Level Discussions Aimed at Shaping the Future of Sustainable Agriculture

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – It is all systems go as Kenya prepares to host the 2nd Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference in the capital, Nairobi.

By moving towards more ecologically friendly solutions with long-term planning and vision, this conference seeks to inspire important stakeholders to fund interventions that change the current unsustainable food systems.

The conference, which will include field trips and sit-in sessions, will take place in Nairobi, Kenya, from March 25 to 28, 2025.

The conference will be a hybrid event that includes livestreaming for online attendees and in-person participation.

Y News understands important topics such as generating evidence of the effects of agroecology, scaling up agroecological transitions, digitalising agri-food systems, investing in research and innovation, and trade opportunities.

Others are the involvement of small-scale food producers, including women, youth, indigenous peoples, and the private sector, in the transformation of agri-food systems, all covered at the conference.

The first Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference, which took place in Nairobi from March 22–25, 2023, and had as its theme “Strengthening Resilience and Sustainability in Food Systems for Environmental and Social-Economic Development,” is being built upon by this conference.

According to the organisers, the conference builds further on the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) call to share national and regional food system transformation paths in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda).

“The Summit identified five action tracks, including: ensuring access to safe and nutritious food for all; shifting to sustainable consumption patterns; boosting nature-positive production; advancing equitable livelihoods; and building resilience to vulnerabilities, shocks and stress.”

In terms of production, distribution, processing, consumption, farmer organisation, markets, and trade, the conference offers an ecosystem of organisations and initiatives a platform to exchange findings and experiences about how agri-food systems can support systems that are resilient, equitable, efficient, and culturally diverse.

“Build a convincing case for women’s and youth’s role as active partners in the creation of sustainable food systems,” said the event organisers during a press conference at a Nairobi hotel this week.

More than 600 people and 30 exhibitors from different East African nations who are interested in the expansion and advancement of the agroecological industry will be present at the conference.
