Car & General Appoints Former PS Esther Koimett as New Director

NAIROBI, Kenya — Car & General Kenya PLC has appointed Esther Koimett, a seasoned public servant and former Principal Secretary for Broadcasting and Telecommunications, as its newest Director, the company announced.

In a statement, the Nairobi-based conglomerate described Koimett as “one of Kenya’s most seasoned and distinguished public servants, with over 35 years of experience spanning investment promotion, banking, privatization, public enterprise reform, and public policy.”

Koimett, who served in various senior capacities in the Ministry of ICT, Innovation, and Youth Affairs during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, played a central role in advancing Kenya’s digital economy.

She provided strategic oversight for key state corporations, including the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), Media Council of Kenya, and the Kenya Film Commission.

Her previous portfolio also includes a stint as Principal Secretary at the State Department for Transport, where she guided policy implementation and oversight of state agencies in the transport sector. She was instrumental in addressing stalled infrastructure projects and regularly briefed parliamentary committees on progress reports.

Koimett’s distinguished career also includes roles as Investment Secretary and Director General, Public Investments and Portfolio Management at the National Treasury, Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Information, and Managing Director and CEO of the Kenya Post Office Savings Bank.

Beyond public service, she brings extensive corporate governance experience, currently chairing the Boards of M-Pesa Holdings Company Ltd and AAR Insurance Kenya Ltd. She has also served on the boards of Safaricom PLC, Kenya Commercial Bank, Nairobi Securities Exchange, and Kenya Ports Authority.

Koimett holds a Bachelor of Commerce and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Nairobi, as well as an Advanced Management Programme (AMP) certificate from Strathmore University. She is a member of the Institute of Investment and Financial Analysts (Kenya).

Car & General, founded in 1936 and headquartered in Nairobi, operates across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and South Sudan. The company’s diversified portfolio spans automotive distribution, manufacturing, agribusiness, and real estate, and it is best known for distributing motorcycles, tuk-tuks, generators, and marine engines.

The appointment underscores Car & General’s continued drive to strengthen its leadership team with high-profile professionals from both the public and private sectors.
