NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenyan comedian Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, has died while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital.
News of his death broke on Tuesday morning, sparking an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow artists, and public figures across the country.
The cause of death had not been officially disclosed at the time of publication.
His passing was confirmed by fellow comedian Kafengo in a statement on Facebook.
“We are heartbroken to announce the sudden demise of Zakaria Kariuki a.k.a Mr KK Mwenyewe. He passed away yesterday evening while undergoing medical attention at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital,” Kafengo wrote. “During these sad moments, we ask for support and prayers for the family and friends. May God give us strength during these difficult times. May his soul rest in peace.”
Mr. KK Mwenyewe rose to national fame through his witty, low-budget skits, most notably for his clever impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
His humorous takes on Kenyan politics and everyday life won him a loyal online following and positioned him as one of the most promising voices in the country’s comedy scene.
Tributes have since poured in, with fans hailing him as a rare talent who used satire to reflect society without malice.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah was among the first public figures to mourn the rising star, describing him as more than a comedian — a cultural voice for a new generation.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Zakaria Kariuki, popularly known as Mr. KK Mwenyewe, a young and talented comedian whose voice resonated with the spirit of a generation,” said Omtatah in a statement. “Through satire and art, Mr. KK courageously held a mirror to society, using humor not to divide, but to awaken, educate, and unite.”
He added:
“Kenya has not only lost a comedian but also a brave young patriot. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire creative community. May his soul rest in peace, and may his light continue to inspire courage and creativity.”
