NAIROBI, Kenya – Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two women in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area after they were found in possession of counterfeit foreign currency worth Sh70 million.
The Friday morning operation was carried out following what the DCI described as “solid intelligence.” Officers recovered bundles of fake $100 notes hidden inside a handbag.
A count at the DCI Nairobi Area headquarters confirmed the haul to be USD 560,000 (about Sh70 million), all in counterfeit bills.
“The arrests raise concern about a wider network behind the circulation of fake foreign notes within and beyond Nairobi,” the DCI said in a statement.
The two suspects remain in custody as detectives finalise investigations before charging them in court.

A chase ensued before the vehicle was disabled, and the driver, identified as Ndung’u, was arrested as he tried to flee on foot.
A search of the car uncovered five and a half gunny bags of cannabis sativa, which police secured as exhibits alongside the impounded vehicle.
The suspect is being held in custody pending arraignment.
