NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society (KOGS) has raised concern over the continued detention of veteran gynaecologist Dr. Job Obwaka, calling on authorities to urgently review his medical condition and respect legal safeguards already granted by the courts.
In a statement issued on March 15, the professional medical body said it was deeply troubled by the detention of the senior doctor, who it described as a respected specialist with more than five decades of service in Kenya’s healthcare sector.
According to KOGS, Dr. Obwaka has practiced medicine for 55 years, making significant contributions to maternal health and family care across the country. The organisation noted that he is currently being considered for a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his long-standing service.
The society said the doctor remains an active admitting consultant at The Nairobi Hospital and also serves as a co-opted board member of the Kenya Hospital Association, where he volunteers his professional expertise.
KOGS said the situation is particularly concerning given the doctor’s age and medical condition. Dr. Obwaka, who is over 80 years old, reportedly lives with multiple health complications and recently underwent open-heart surgery.
The organisation said his physician has formally communicated the seriousness of his health status to authorities.
Despite these concerns, the society stated that Dr. Obwaka remains in custody at Muthaiga Police Station.
The doctors’ body further noted that although the veteran specialist had obtained anticipatory bail after learning of the impending arrest, he had still been detained and denied cash bail.
In its statement, KOGS urged authorities to urgently address the matter and ensure the doctor’s health and rights are protected while the legal process proceeds.
Among the measures requested by the society is an immediate medical review of Dr. Obwaka’s condition, given his recent cardiac surgery and advanced age.
The organisation also called for authorities to respect the anticipatory bail order already issued and to ensure due legal process is followed.
Additionally, KOGS asked that the doctor be granted cash bail or other non-custodial measures to safeguard his health while investigations continue.
The society further appealed for humane and dignified treatment in line with human rights standards and medical ethics.
It also called for transparency in the handling of the allegations facing the doctor, including access to a members’ register that it said is central to the accusations.
“Our foremost concern is the health, dignity, and safety of our colleague,” the statement said. “Justice must be pursued in a manner that is lawful, humane, and respectful of the rights of all individuals.”
The statement was signed by Dr. Kireki Omanwa, President of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society.
