BUSIA, Kenya — Police in Busia County have arrested two suspected drug traffickers and seized large quantities of cannabis sativa following a coordinated anti-narcotics operation along the Busia–Kisumu Highway, the National Police Service (NPS) has said.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the NPS said officers mounted a multi-point operation targeting narcotics trafficking routes commonly used to move illicit drugs into and within the region.
First Arrest at Suo Roadblock
In the first incident, officers manning a roadblock at Suo intercepted a motorcycle rider suspected of transporting illegal substances.
Upon inspection, police recovered five sacks weighing 163.75 kilograms of a green substance believed to be cannabis sativa.
The rider was immediately arrested and escorted to a police station as detectives launched investigations into the source and intended destination of the drugs.
Second Interception Along Same Route
Later in the day, officers stopped a passenger bus travelling along the same highway. A search of the vehicle led to the arrest of one passenger who was found in possession of a bag containing approximately 3.4 kilograms of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa.
Police said the arrest points to the continued use of public transport to traffic narcotics, often in smaller consignments intended to evade detection.
Ongoing Investigations
Both suspects are currently being held in police custody pending arraignment in court, as forensic analysis is conducted to confirm the nature of the seized substances.

The National Police Service said the operation remains ongoing, with officers intensifying surveillance and intelligence-led actions to dismantle drug trafficking networks operating in Busia County and neighbouring regions.
“These interceptions underscore the National Police Service’s unwavering commitment to disrupting the supply and distribution of narcotic drugs within Busia County and beyond,” the NPS said.
