NAIROBI, Kenya – Kenya’s future tech leaders took center stage today at the Huawei ICT Competition National Final Award Ceremony held at the Glee Hotel.
Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Migosi Ogamba, presided over the event, which celebrated the country’s most promising young innovators and reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to advancing digital education.
The Huawei ICT Competition, an initiative designed to nurture digital skills and technological excellence, attracted over 21,000 students from universities and colleges across 18 Sub-Saharan African countries.
From this competitive pool, Kenya’s top 21 students advanced to the Regional Final, with 12 earning the honor to represent the nation at the Global Finals in Shenzhen, China.
These students will also participate in an exclusive technology immersion program in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Ogamba praised the competition as a transformative platform that equips Kenyan students with cutting-edge digital competencies.
“Technology is the cornerstone of modern economies. As Kenya advances towards a digital future, we must empower our students with the skills needed to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic growth,” he said.
The Cabinet Secretary also commended Huawei for its sustained collaboration with Kenya’s education sector.
He highlighted the company’s pivotal role in training more than 500 university and TVET lecturers in emerging technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cloud Computing, and 5G technology.
Such initiatives align closely with President William Ruto’s Digital Superhighway Initiative, a key component of Kenya’s digital transformation agenda.
“Strategic partnerships are essential for bridging the digital skills gap and integrating technology into our education system,” Hon. Ogamba added, emphasizing collaborations with organizations like Huawei, Safaricom, and UNESCO.
He also reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing higher education funding and fostering a sustainable ICT talent pipeline to fuel economic growth.
