A Promising Career Cut Short
Kimani rose to national prominence at just 19 years old, quickly becoming one of Citizen TV’s youngest and most promising journalists.
Known for his sharp intellect, charm, and creative storytelling, he worked across several platforms including Citizen TV, Inooro FM, and Hot 96, as well as at NTV, where he co-hosted entertainment segments such as The Trend alongside Larry Madowo.
He held a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a Master’s in Nationalism and Ethnic Conflict from the University of London.
However, his life took a difficult turn in 2020, when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The condition forced him in and out of hospital and rehabilitation facilities, leading to the collapse of his once-thriving career.
A Public Struggle With Mental Health
Over the past few years, Kimani had been open about his mental health journey. In a 2023 Instagram video, he appealed for help from Kenyans, saying he was homeless and struggling to rebuild his life.
“Hi guys, Kimani Mbugua here, former star of TV… I’m in trouble, and I need your help,” he said in the emotional video.
He later revealed that he had lost friends, work opportunities, and stability since his diagnosis.
In 2024, after a series of disturbing social media posts, Kimani was admitted to the Mombasa Women Empowerment Network Rescue Centre for long-term mental health care. His father later confirmed he was suffering from bipolar disorder.
Former Governor Sonko had previously offered to cover Kimani’s hospital bills at Mathari Mental Hospital before his transfer to Mombasa for further rehabilitation.
Family Speaks Out
Kimani’s younger sister, Wanjiku Mbugua, once described how her brother’s life changed drastically after his diagnosis.
“Kimani has always been very close to us because he is our only brother. He would lead morning prayers and devotions. Seeing him struggle with mental illness and addiction was heartbreaking,” she said in a past interview with NTV.
News of Kimani’s death has sparked widespread grief across Kenya’s media community, with colleagues and fans describing him as a “brilliant storyteller” whose life reflected the urgent need for greater mental health support in the country.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
