KIRINYAGA, Kenya – Kirinyaga County is mourning the death of its first deputy governor, Julius Muthike Njiiri, who passed away on Sunday night at the age of 65.

According to Tebere Ward MCA Peter Karinga, who is also his brother-in-law, Njiiri died while receiving treatment at Mwea Mission Hospital.

“We have lost a dedicated leader. Right now, the family is meeting at Ngurubani town and at his home in Kiamanyeki village,” Karinga confirmed.

Njiiri served as deputy to Governor Joseph Ndathi during Kirinyaga’s first devolved administration between 2013 and 2017.

He is remembered for his contribution to laying the foundation of the county government at the dawn of devolution.

Leaders across Kirinyaga have eulogised him as a humble and visionary leader.

Senator Kamau Murango led tributes, describing Njiiri as a man who devoted his life to public service.

“His towering legacy as a leader, his humility, and his unmatched dedication to the people of Kirinyaga will remain an enduring inspiration. Hon. Njiiri laid firm foundations upon which our county continues to grow, and his name will forever be written in the story of Kirinyaga,” Murango said.

Details of burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
