NAIROBI, Kenya-The government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding Malindi Airport, positioning the project as a top priority to revive tourism and stimulate economic growth along Kenya’s coast.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, while answering queries in the Senate, said the Ministry is keen to overcome the challenges that have delayed the airport’s upgrade, noting its strategic importance in supporting the hospitality sector in Kilifi County and beyond.
“We are paying attention to Malindi Airport because, albeit the challenges we have faced in its expansion, the tourism industry in this area and the need to sustain investments that are wasting away in the hotel industry due to lack of a good airport are pressing,” Chirchir said.
Currently, the airport’s limited capacity restricts the landing of large aircraft, cutting off the region from direct international flights.
This has contributed to a decline in tourist numbers and placed significant strain on hotels and resorts that rely on international visitors.
“This is a top priority amongst the airports we are paying close attention to. We want to bring in big planes through the expansion of this airport to support the hotel industry and ultimately bring more money to the economy,” Chirchir added.
The planned upgrade includes extending the runway and modernizing terminal facilities to accommodate larger aircraft and improve the passenger experience.
The move is expected to attract more airlines and increase accessibility for tourists and investors.
According to Chirchir, improved air connectivity is essential for unlocking the region’s full potential.
The expansion is anticipated to create jobs, boost local businesses, and reaffirm Malindi’s status as a leading coastal tourism destination.
The government maintains the renewed focus on Malindi Airport reflects a broader push to enhance transport infrastructure and support economic resilience in Kenya’s tourism-dependent regions.
