Gov’t Releases Ksh.23.16B to Support Over 800,000 University and TVET Students

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Ministry of Education has disbursed Ksh.23.16 billion to support 802,159 students in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions across the country.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba on Friday said the funding was released through the Universities Fund and the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to ease the financial burden on learners.

“The Universities Fund has disbursed Ksh.4.1 billion to public universities in scholarship support for students. The Higher Education Loans Board has disbursed Ksh.19.06 billion comprising Ksh.7.6 billion for tuition and Ksh.11.46 billion for student upkeep,” CS Ogamba announced.

He explained that upkeep funds have already been credited to students’ designated payment channels as institutions reopen.

Beneficiaries have been urged to confirm their allocations via HELB portals.

Extended Deadline for First-Years

To accommodate first-year learners, the Ministry has extended the deadline for loan and scholarship applications to September 14, 2025.

Ogamba assured that the government remains committed to ensuring higher education remains accessible and affordable for all.

The fresh allocation follows last week’s release of Ksh.9.46 billion through HELB, benefiting 309,178 university students.

Of that amount, Ksh.5.76 billion went to tuition, while Ksh.3.7 billion was directed to student upkeep.
