NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intense downpours expected across several parts of the country from Sunday, August 17, with risks of flash floods, lightning strikes, strong winds and property damage.
In a statement released on Friday, the weatherman said rainfall in the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands West of Rift Valley will intensify to more than 20mm in 24 hours, before gradually spreading eastwards into the Central and Eastern Highlands.
The heavy rains are forecast to persist until Tuesday, August 19, before easing from Wednesday, August 20.
A strong south-easterly wind current, blowing at more than 25 knots (12.9 m/s), is expected to fuel the system in the eastern sector.
Counties on Alert
Residents have been advised to brace for the wet spell in the following regions:
- Western Kenya: Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Kisii and Nyamira.
- Rift Valley: Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Nakuru, Narok, Baringo, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana and Samburu.
- Northern Kenya: Marsabit.
- Central Kenya: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi.

Advisory to the Public
The Met Department urged residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant, particularly those living in low-lying and riverine zones that are prone to sudden flash floods.
Motorists and aviators have been cautioned of reduced visibility, while people living downstream of seasonal rivers have been warned of sudden water surges.
“Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water, and not to shelter under trees or near grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightning strikes,” the advisory read.
The weatherman also cautioned that strong winds could blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damage.
