NAIROBI, Kenya – Nairobi lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu was shot eight times, with an autopsy confirming he died from severe bleeding caused by multiple gunshot wounds, government pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has revealed.
Speaking on Thursday, Dr. Oduor said Mbobu suffered catastrophic injuries to the spine and chest during the attack on September 9 along Magadi Road.
Two bullets were recovered from his body, while the rest exited after tearing through vital organs.
“His spine was severely injured, and most of the bullets had entry and exit wounds apart from the two we recovered. We can say he died from severe bleeding,” Oduor told reporters after the post-mortem, conducted in the presence of family pathologists, police officers, and Makueni Senator Dan Maanzo.
Some of the bullets, Oduor added, were directed at the neck, underscoring the precision of the attackers.
Police trace final moments
Detectives have now reconstructed the lawyer’s final movements. Mbobu left his office at 5:09 pm on Tuesday and was heading to his Bogani residence in Karen when two assailants on a motorbike trailed and fatally shot him.
Investigators are examining whether his killing was linked to his legal work.
His recent bank transactions and client engagements are under review, with one client already recording a statement.
Police are also scrutinizing his phone records to determine who he spoke to before and after the fatal meeting.
“It could be anything from his work or something else. We are open with the theories so far,” a senior investigator said.
DCI appeals for public help
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin urged Kenyans with information to assist detectives, either by reporting to the nearest police station, calling the #FichuKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203, or sending tips via WhatsApp to 0709 570 000.
Amin said homicide detectives and forensic experts had combed the crime scene for evidence and were working to piece together events leading to the murder.
“The DCI is committed to ensuring that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. Our investigators are working diligently, employing all available resources and expertise to unmask those behind this incident,” he said.
The killing of Mbobu, described by colleagues as a seasoned and principled lawyer, has sparked outrage within the legal fraternity, with the Law Society of Kenya calling for speedy investigations and justice for his family.
