Ida Odinga Urges Kenyans to Mourn Raila in Peace as Nation Bids Farewell

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Mama Ida Odinga, widow of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, has called on Kenyans to uphold peace and unity as the country mourns the loss of one of its most influential political figures.

Speaking at Nyayo Stadium during the State Funeral on Friday, Ida made an emotional appeal for calm, urging mourners to honour Raila’s lifelong commitment to peace and justice.

“I appeal to everyone — let us mourn Raila in peace,” she said. “I know you are all mourning, but let us keep peace so that peace can prevail here and in the rest of the country.”

Her brief but powerful message drew applause from the crowd, many of whom had travelled from across Kenya to pay their last respects.

Ida described her late husband as a man who not only fought for democracy but also believed that peace should begin within families and communities.

“Raila always said peace must start in our homes before it can live in our nation,” she added.

Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while receiving treatment in Kerala, India.

His passing prompted a seven-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast and a State Funeral organized by the government.

President William Ruto declared Friday a public holiday to allow Kenyans to participate in the farewell ceremonies.

Security was tight at Nyayo Stadium and other memorial venues, including Kasarani, as thousands gathered to celebrate the life of the man fondly known as Baba.

The Odinga family led tributes throughout the week, with Raila Odinga Junior sharing a touching video montage, and relatives holding prayer vigils in Nairobi and Kisumu.

Ida’s message resonated deeply online, where Kenyans praised her grace and composure amid grief.

Raila will be laid to rest at the family home in Bondo, Siaya County, beside his father, Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

As the nation bids farewell, Mama Ida’s voice has emerged as a steadying force — calling for reflection, restraint, and togetherness at a time of deep national emotion.
