NAIROBI, Kenya – The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has intensified preparations for the November 27 by-elections, officially publishing Gazette Notices outlining key details of the mini-polls.
The notices, issued on Friday, October 31, list all nominated candidates, polling stations, tallying centres, and electoral areas where contests will not be held due to unopposed candidates.
According to the IEBC, Mitkei and Tembelio Wards have been declared uncontested, meaning the nominated candidates in these areas will assume office automatically.
The Commission said the decision aligns with its mandate to promote transparency and avoid unnecessary expenditure in areas without competition.
Campaigning for the by-elections began on October 8 and will run until November 24—48 hours before polling day—when all campaign activities must cease in line with electoral laws.
The Commission has reminded political parties and candidates to strictly adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct throughout the campaign period.
It also issued a stern warning against voter bribery, intimidation, and violence, saying offenders will face prosecution.
“All candidates and participating political parties are required to adhere to the Electoral Code of Conduct throughout this period. The Commission remains resolute in its mandate to uphold and strengthen Kenya’s democracy,” the IEBC stated.
The by-elections are widely viewed as an early test of political strength for major parties ahead of the 2027 General Election.
They are expected to attract close scrutiny from political observers, civil society, and voters alike.
The Commission said it has made the Gazette Notices publicly available on its official website to enhance transparency.
Voters have been encouraged to confirm their registration details, identify their polling centres, and familiarize themselves with the voting process in advance.
