Inquest into Activist Rex Masai’s Killing Stalls as Key Police Witness Fails to Appear

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The inquest into the killing of activist Rex Masai hit a setback after a crucial police witness failed to appear in court, delaying proceedings yet again.

The witness, Fredrick Ole Tepes, who was the armourer at Central Police Station, was expected to testify before a civilian witness.

However, with his absence, the hearing was postponed to Thursday.

Masai was fatally shot on June 24, 2024, during youth-led protests demanding better governance.

His death sparked public outrage and intensified calls for police accountability in handling demonstrations.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK), which is representing Masai’s family, vowed to push for justice.

Lawyer Mwangi Chege emphasized that the case is a critical test of the right to protest and state accountability in the use of force.

“We will ensure that no security officer ever uses live ammunition on civilians exercising their constitutional rights,” said Chege. “The case of Rex Masai must set a precedent so that no future demonstration ends in bloodshed.”

The inquest has already revealed inconsistencies in police records.

Former Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei and the former Nairobi Central Police commander previously testified that there were no operational orders or deployment records identifying officers stationed at the scene when Masai was shot.

The missing records, combined with the latest delay, have raised concerns about transparency in the investigation.

The armourer’s testimony is expected to shed light on firearm movements on the day Masai was killed, potentially identifying the officer responsible.

The inquest is now set to proceed on Thursday and Friday, with the police officer, a civilian witness, and activist Boniface Mwangi expected to testify.Top of Form
