HOMA BAY, Kenya — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has warned that individuals engaging in political hooliganism and criminal gang activities will face prosecution, saying the government will not tolerate rising insecurity linked to politics.
Speaking on Tuesday during the launch of his Jukwaa la Usalama security tour in Homa Bay, Murkomen vowed a nationwide crackdown on groups hired to intimidate communities and disrupt public order.
“The culture of impunity must be dismantled to safeguard Kenya’s democracy,” Murkomen said, adding that criminal gangs “are not useful for our security or politics.”
The CS condemned the September 14 assault on a journalist, describing it as “very unfortunate,” and commended swift administrative action taken in response.
He emphasised that cooperation between national and county leaders is crucial in tackling insecurity.
The security tour will culminate in a town hall meeting at the County Commissioner’s residence, where residents are expected to share their views with national and county officials.
Murkomen further cited reports from Kisii County where gangs have allegedly detained and tortured victims, promising decisive legal consequences.
“We will be taking very stern legal action, arresting these people and taking them to court,” he said, urging the Judiciary to expedite related cases and impose strict penalties.
He noted that hired goons have increasingly been used to disrupt peaceful meetings, protests, and even funerals, warning that the government will intensify its efforts to dismantle such networks across the country.
