MIGORI, Kenya – Security agencies have launched investigations after explosive devices were discovered and safely removed from Nyatike Bridge in Migori County, barely a day before President William Ruto’s scheduled tour of the region.
According to a police report, a multi-agency presidential advance security team recovered seven pieces of gel explosives and a detonating cord measuring about two metres, which had been concealed at the edge of the bridge, approximately four kilometres east of Macalder Police Station.
The explosives were detected during a routine security sweep ahead of the President’s planned visit and were successfully removed without incident.
The operation involved officers from the Kenya Police Service, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Bomb Disposal Unit.
Preliminary findings indicate that the hole in which the explosives were hidden had been drilled using a compressor machine, raising suspicions that the devices may have been planted several months ago.
The scene was secured and processed by investigators, with the recovered explosives taken by the Bomb Disposal Unit in Migori for forensic examination.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing to determine who planted the explosives and the motive behind the act.
President Ruto was expected to use Nyatike Bridge during his tour of the area scheduled for Wednesday.
