Jubilee: Capitation Cuts Will Push Poor Students Out of School

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Jubilee Party has sharply criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration over recent budget cuts in the education sector, warning that the move could force thousands of vulnerable students out of school.

Speaking during a grassroots mobilisation meeting in Embu County, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni accused the government of abandoning its duty to protect access to education for all Kenyans, especially those from low-income backgrounds.

Kioni took issue with the government’s decision to reduce capitation to public schools, abolish funding for national examinations, and scrap the EduAfya student health insurance scheme.

“These drastic funding cuts will push many children out of school, especially those from low-income families. It’s a direct assault on the right to education,” he said. “At a time when Kenyans are struggling to make ends meet, the government should be cushioning families, not making life harder.”

Kioni added that the government’s austerity measures would deepen inequality and reverse gains made in expanding access to education in recent years.

He also used the platform to rally support for Jubilee’s 2027 presidential candidate, former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i.

“Matiang’i understands how government works and he delivers. He’s the kind of decisive and results-oriented leader Kenya needs to turn things around,” Kioni said, framing the 2027 election as a critical turning point for the country.
