Junet Mohamed Kicked Out as Azimio Secretary General in Coalition Shake-Up

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohamed has been removed as Secretary General of the Azimio la Umoja One-Kenya Alliance following a leadership shake-up approved by the coalition’s National Executive Council (NEC).

The changes were confirmed on Tuesday, February 3, after a meeting of the NEC and the party council chaired by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Junet has been replaced by Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) legislator who has been vocal about maintaining the party’s independence within the opposition coalition.

In the same resolutions, Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka was appointed the new Party Leader of Azimio la Umoja One-Kenya Alliance.

“Following the resolutions of 2nd February, 2026, of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party’s Council and National Executive Committee, the party notifies the public of the change of the following officials,” the coalition said in a statement.

“The new Party Leader is H.E. Dr Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, E.G.H, SC, while the new Secretary General is Hon. Caroli Omondi.”

Kalonzo takes over from former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who died in October 2025, marking a major transition in the leadership of the opposition coalition.

The NEC also appointed Philip Kisia as the new Executive Director of the coalition. His appointment has already been communicated to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

Kisia replaces former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, who resigned from the position ahead of the NEC meeting. In a letter addressed to Uhuru Kenyatta, Tuju confirmed that he had formally handed over coalition affairs to Kisia.

The leadership changes come amid growing political realignments following Odinga’s death and internal tensions within ODM and the wider Azimio coalition.

Junet, a close ally of Odinga during his lifetime, has in recent months openly associated with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and supported the continuation of cooperation under the broad-based government arrangement.

He has also been linked to internal ODM divisions, where rival factions disagree over whether the party should maintain close ties with UDA or reassert its opposition role.

His successor, Caroli Omondi, has consistently argued that ODM should retain its political autonomy and avoid formal alignment with the ruling party, even within coalition arrangements.

ODM remains one of the key constituent parties of the Azimio la Umoja One-Kenya Alliance.
