NAIROBI, Kenya — Katiba Institute has appointed human rights advocate Abdul Noormohamed as the new Chair of its Board of Directors, succeeding Prof. Jill Cottrell Ghai, who will continue to serve as a board member.
Noormohamed, a lawyer and policy strategist with over two decades of experience in civic engagement and human rights, currently leads Civic Voice, an initiative focused on youth-led democracy, technology justice, and civic participation.
He previously served as Vice President for Africa at Luminate, where he oversaw regional strategy on digital rights and public interest media, and as Executive Director of the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ-Kenya).
His earlier roles include stints at the Open Society Foundations and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, where he headed the Legal and Redress Department.
Beyond his professional roles, Noormohamed sits on the board of the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) and is a member of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association’s Human Rights and Rule of Law Committee.
He holds a Master of Laws in Public International Law from University College London and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi.
Katiba Institute, which works to advance constitutionalism through research, public interest litigation, and civic engagement, expressed confidence in Noormohamed’s leadership.
“We are honoured to welcome Abdul to this role and look forward to his leadership in advancing our mission,” the institute said in a statement, while thanking Prof. Ghai for her guidance as outgoing board chair.
Founded in 2011, Katiba Institute has been a key player in promoting accountability, defending civic space, and safeguarding constitutional values in Kenya.
