NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has launched investigations into several of its personnel following allegations that they stole and concealed a portion of narcotics intercepted during a multi-agency security operation off the Kenyan coast.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, KDF confirmed that on 25 October 2025, a joint security team successfully intercepted a dhow carrying 1,024 kilograms of methamphetamine (crystal meth). The narcotics were offloaded for secure transport ashore under the supervision of multiple agencies, including KDF.
However, allegations later emerged claiming that some KDF personnel involved in the operation diverted and hid part of the haul for personal gain. The military has disputed the claim, insisting the entire consignment remains intact.
“We wish to clarify that the entire 1,024 kilograms of methamphetamine offloaded ashore remains intact and is under continuous, round-the-clock protection by a dedicated multi-agency security team,” KDF said.
The statement further confirmed that the implicated officers are under investigation by the relevant authorities. KDF pledged full cooperation and stated that any personnel found culpable will face disciplinary and legal action.
“Should the allegations be substantiated, appropriate disciplinary and legal measures will be taken in accordance with the law,” the military added.
The incident comes amid stepped-up maritime surveillance operations as Kenyan authorities target drug trafficking networks using the Indian Ocean route. Security analysts say the dhow interception was one of the largest narcotics seizures in recent years.
KDF reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and safeguarding national security, assuring the public that the integrity of the operation remains intact as investigations continue.
The Kenya Navy intercepted a non registered dhow codenamed ‘IGOR’ and seized 1024 kilograms of methamphetamine with a street value of approximately 8.2 billion shillings, 630 kilometres East of Mombasa Coast.See more: shorturl.at/LCv8K
