NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued an updated heavy rainfall advisory warning that downpours exceeding 20 millimetres within 24 hours are expected to continue across several regions of the country through March 9, 2026.
In Advisory Update No. 02/2026 released on March 3 at 4:00 PM, KMD said the rains would intensify between March 4 and March 7 before reducing in most parts of the country by March 8.
However, persistent heavy rainfall is forecast to continue until March 9 in the Lake Victoria Basin, Western Kenya, parts of the Central Highlands, Southeastern Lowlands, and the Coastal region.
The department classified the severity level as moderate to heavy, with a probability range of 33pc to 66pc.
Areas Likely to Experience Prolonged Heavy Rain
KMD warned that the expected rainfall could trigger flooding, flash floods — particularly in downstream and low-lying areas — reduced visibility, and rising river levels.
“Residents in flood-prone areas should remain vigilant as river levels may rise rapidly,” the advisory stated.
Weather experts note that March typically marks the onset of the long rains season in many parts of Kenya.
Heavy downpours during this period often disrupt transport networks, damage infrastructure, and displace households in vulnerable zones, particularly informal settlements and areas near water bodies.
Safety Precautions
Authorities have urged the public to take precautionary measures, including:
- Avoid driving or walking through moving water or flooded roads.
- Do not shelter under trees or near grilled windows during thunderstorms due to lightning risk.
- Stay alert for sudden floods, especially in low-lying and downstream areas.
County disaster response units are expected to remain on standby as the rainfall peaks later this week.
The Meteorological Department has advised Kenyans to monitor official KMD communication platforms for real-time updates and further advisories.
Heavy rains are expected in several counties, please remain alert and prepare for possible flooding and disruptions.Keep monitoring official updates from @MeteoKenya and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
