Kenya Met Warns of Showers, Thunderstorms and Extreme Heat in Coming Days

Date:

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenyans should brace for shifting weather conditions this weekend, with cloudy mornings in Nairobi, thunderstorms in western and coastal regions, and extreme heat in the north, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The forecast, covering September 19 to 22, indicates varied weather across the country.

Nairobi will start off with overcast mornings that will clear into sunny intervals, punctuated by occasional showers.

Daytime highs are expected to reach 30°C, while nighttime temperatures could dip to as low as 6°C.

The Rift Valley highlands, the Lake Victoria Basin, and coastal counties will be wetter, with morning showers followed by afternoon thunderstorms.

Residents of Kisumu, Kakamega, and Kericho should prepare for storm activity, while Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale can expect intermittent rainfall and stable temperatures of around 31°C.

Strong winds, exceeding 25 knots, are expected in the coastal strip and southeastern lowlands, including Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni, where sunny spells will alternate with light showers.

Meanwhile, northern Kenya will remain sweltering. Turkana and Samburu may see light showers by Monday, but temperatures will peak at 36°C–37°C.

Counties such as Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo will be mostly hot and dry, with highs reaching 38°C.

The department urged communities in storm-prone regions to remain vigilant and closely follow updates from county meteorological offices.

The warning comes amid a season of increasingly unpredictable weather, with past forecasts pointing to suppressed short rains and heightened risks of floods in some parts of the country.
