KAJIADO, Kenya — Kenya Power has announced a planned electricity interruption that will affect parts of Kajiado County on Wednesday, December 24, as the utility undertakes routine maintenance and network improvement works.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, December 23, the power distributor said the outage will run from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., affecting Kajiado Town and several surrounding areas.
According to Kenya Power, the affected locations include Saina, Blue Sky, Oloyangalani, Saab Royale, Signs Feeds, Kajiado Referral Hospital, Maasai Polytechnic, Kajiado County Government offices, Sambel, Maasai Mara, Taya Chemicals, Kajiado Town, and all adjacent customers.
The company said the interruption is necessary to allow technicians to carry out essential maintenance aimed at improving the reliability and stability of the electricity supply in the area.
“Customers are advised to treat all power lines as live during the period of interruption,” Kenya Power said, while apologising for any inconvenience caused.
Planned outages are a regular feature of Kenya Power’s maintenance programme, with the utility noting that such works are critical in reducing unplanned blackouts and improving service delivery, particularly in fast-growing towns such as Kajiado.
The announcement comes as Kenya Power continues to roll out wider reforms aimed at modernising its operations and customer service. Earlier this month, the company announced that all applications for new electricity connections will now be submitted exclusively through its online platform.
In a separate statement dated December 2, Kenya Power said individuals and businesses seeking new power connections must apply via its self-service portal, accessible through computers and mobile devices.
“Individuals and businesses seeking new electricity connections from Kenya Power will now be required to submit their applications exclusively through the company’s website using the link https://selfservice.kplc.co.ke/public/,” the statement said.
The utility explained that the move is intended to improve operational efficiency, enhance customer experience, and significantly reduce processing times for new connections.
Kenya Power further noted that it will no longer accept paper-based applications at its service centres and banking halls, effectively phasing out manual submissions.
“Effectively, the company will stop receiving manual electricity connection applications at its service centres and banking halls. Beneficiaries of the Last Mile Connectivity Project will be engaged by Kenya Power officials on site during implementation of the projects,” the statement added.
According to the company, the shift to a fully digital application process is expected to improve transparency and accountability while making access to electricity more convenient for customers across the country.
As residents and businesses in Kajiado prepare for Wednesday’s outage, Kenya Power has urged customers to plan accordingly, particularly those running critical services, as it works to upgrade infrastructure to meet growing demand.
