NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenya Red Cross Society has issued a public safety advisory urging Kenyans to take precautionary measures during floods as heavy rains continue to affect several parts of the country.
In a safety alert released this week, the humanitarian organisation warned that floods can quickly turn deadly if people underestimate the power of moving water or ignore evacuation advice.
The Red Cross advised residents in flood-prone areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground whenever flooding occurs and to avoid remaining in low-lying areas where water levels can rise rapidly.
“Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down, while one foot of flowing water can sweep away a vehicle,” the advisory stated, highlighting the dangers often overlooked during flooding incidents.
The organisation also urged households to switch off electricity at the main power source if their homes become flooded to prevent electrocution and electrical fires.
Residents were cautioned against parking vehicles, driving, or conducting activities near rivers, streams, and other water channels during heavy rains, as these areas can flood suddenly.
The advisory further warned members of the public to stay away from fallen power lines and muddy floodwaters, noting that electricity may still be present even when power infrastructure appears damaged.
“In flooded areas, people should use a stick to test the depth of the water before walking through it,” the Red Cross advised, adding that individuals should never attempt to drive across flooded bridges or roads.
The organisation encouraged the public to stay informed by following updates from radio and television stations, which often relay official weather alerts and disaster response information.
The advisory comes as authorities continue to monitor rainfall patterns across the country, with meteorological agencies warning that intense rainfall could trigger flash floods in some regions.
Flooding has in recent years become one of the most destructive weather-related hazards in Kenya, often causing deaths, displacement, and damage to homes, roads, and farms.
Public safety agencies say community awareness remains a critical component of disaster risk reduction, particularly in areas historically affected by seasonal flooding.
The Kenya Red Cross urged residents to report emergencies and request assistance through its national emergency hotline 1199, which operates around the clock.
Officials emphasised that early evacuation, vigilance, and adherence to safety guidelines can significantly reduce injuries and fatalities during flooding events.
As the rainy season progresses, authorities are calling on communities, local leaders, and emergency responders to remain prepared and respond quickly to potential flood threats.
