NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s Harambee Starlets have booked their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging out The Gambia in a thrilling qualifier that showcased tactical discipline and renewed confidence in women’s football.

The Starlets sealed victory through a decisive goal that sparked celebrations across the country, marking Kenya’s return to continental competition after several years of absence. The goal, a clinical finish following a swift counterattack, highlighted the team’s growing cohesion under coach Beldine Odemba.

Speaking after the match, Odemba praised her players’ resilience, saying, “This team has shown that with focus and belief, we can compete at the highest level in Africa. The girls have worked tirelessly for this moment.”

The win cements Kenya’s comeback on the continental stage following administrative turbulence that had sidelined the team from international competitions due to FIFA’s suspension of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) in 2022.

Since then, the federation has restructured operations, allowing women’s football programs to regain momentum.

Sports analysts say the Starlets’ success reflects the rising profile of women’s football in Kenya. “This qualification isn’t just about the team—it’s about opportunity, investment, and faith in women’s sports,” said sports commentator Carol Radull.

Fans flooded social media with celebratory messages, sharing clips of the winning goal and rallying behind the #WAFCON hashtag. The Starlets now turn their focus to the continental stage, where they will face Africa’s top sides, including Nigeria’s Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is expected to announce the final tournament fixtures in the coming weeks.

Kenya’s qualification offers a morale boost for local women’s football programs, with many calling on the government and FKF to maintain funding, improve facilities, and invest in youth development ahead of the tournament.

With renewed optimism, the Harambee Starlets’ journey to WAFCON is now being viewed as a symbol of national pride—and a testament to Kenya’s growing strength in African football.
